Marquita: Female: 1993: United States

After living and teaching in Korea for almost two years, I am more aware of my skills as an educator. When I first came to teach in Korea, I struggled a lot, not with the difference in Korean culture, but the difference in learning how to teach students from that culture. While I had my obstacles, I overcame them, and am now very comfortable with my skills as a teacher.
I am an artist in my free time, so I like to combine my creativity with the lessons, and allow my students to do the same. I know how to teach from a book, and I know how to deviate from the textbook just enough to teach the lesson AND make it fun and interactive.
My science degree has also allowed me to have fun creating some experiments with my students and discussions about various complex topics.
My experience as an RA in college has also helped me to perform better in the classroom. As simple as it sounds, I try to take the time to actually listen to my students, and I make sure to show them how much I care. I try to use language that spins negatives into positives, and I try to encourage my students to try their best.

I realize that Korean society is tough and competitive, and my students are unfortunately forced to take part in this "race to be the best" society. However, I try to allow my students to have a space where they can openly express themselves and be comfortable with learning English at their personal level and pace.
My students are the next generation of global leaders, and I want to show them that I will support them.

My method in approaching standardized tests is foolproof regardless of the specific test, as proven by my achieving 99% in all of 3 standardized tests that are known to be more challenging that the SAT (i.e., GRE, GMAT, and LSAT) within a span of 4 months with little additional preparation.

I use my passion in education and knowledge to fuel my desire to instill moral values in the next generation. Influenced by my father, a biomedical engineer who has spent his entire life rehabilitating the disabled, I have an extremely strong sense of morals and feel obliged to pass them on the who will follow.

Anna: 1992: United States: University of Chicago

I am a great candidate for this opportunity because I already have experience teaching SAT and ACT courses in Asia, as well as significant EFL/ESOL experience. I love tailoring curriculum to the needs of my students, and I especially enjoy teaching test prep because it helps me lay out clear goals for my students and assess their progress. My strongest skill is English grammar; I actually enjoy explaining the nuances of comma usage. Even better is getting my students to appreciate those nuances!

I'm a firm believer in "funducation," as I like to call it: education should be challenging and fun. One of my proudest moments in test prep teaching was the final Jeopardy-style SAT English review game that I set up to help my students study for their final test. They were all focused on finding the errors in the sentences, and it was incredible hearing these students, who knew little formal grammar before, enthusiastically explain not only what answer was correct, but why it was the best answer.

I'm not satisfied with mediocrity. I like to tweak the curriculum and exercises to meet my students' needs, and I'm constantly thinking of review games to bring the material to life. I love brainstorming with other teachers to solve problems, design curricula, and share activity ideas.

Michelle: 1995: United States: University of Chicago

I have done a fair bit of private tutoring for students ranging from elementary school to college. The majority of my teaching experience comes from swim lessons. I’ve been a swimmer my whole life and I’ve been teaching both group and private swim lessons for 8 years. The sport alone has taught me self-discipline. Teaching swim lessons taught me how to develop and teach personalized lesson for both individuals and groups.

In college, I worked at the Office of Career Advancement for three years for several departments including STEM, entrepreneurship, journalism, arts and media. I’ve worked on many projects all with the goal of facilitating students with the job search and the transition from college to the work force. This experience taught me how to handle multiple projects at once and how to work with both students and administrators.

Last summer I worked for a tech startup called Edovo. They provide tablets which function as online classrooms to inmates across America. As a content intern, I was responsible for creating courses. Most of my courses were reading comprehension, so I would read books and create mini quizzes after each chapter to test for reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. I learned how to create a variety of tests and courses for different education levels.

— Experience —

Apart from my career in journalism, childcare has always been an integral aspect of my life. While in high school, I assisted my mother at her childcare center, working with children of all ages, leading up to my time as a daycare manager while in my freshman year of college.

As a daycare manager, I worked extensively with children ages 6 months to 13 years old on cognitive skills, engagement, music, dance and STEAM-focused learning. I also worked with children with disabilities and conducted birthday parties and special events for children along with their parents. For this job, I was instructed to take several certifications and classes, such as CPR, child abuse and proper discipline training, along with educational instruction.

Overall, when it comes to childcare, what I enjoy most is when children truly enjoy the process of learning, despite obstacles and barriers they may encounter during the process.

— Personality —

Overall, I possess a profoundly bubbly and zealous attitude, especially when it comes to children. I truly enjoy learning from them and take interest in how much wonder and intelligence children present. I also stem from a musical background, where at one juncture in my life I trained professionally as a singer. This is an area of education that I truly love engaging with children, such as playful singing games in order to assist with cognition and understanding of subjects. Dance is yet another area I’ve studied in the past and would love to bring to the classroom.

A few adjectives my friends would use to describe to me are: goal-oriented, dedicated, responsible, reliable, caring, patient, understanding, knowledgeable, intuitive, creative, funny, entertaining, open-minded, culturally competent.

I’m also very interested and invested in Korean culture and would love the opportunity to live in Seoul.

— Skills —

As a journalist, I am very skilled in research, reporting, interviewing, interacting with strangers and writing composition. And in the past as an assistant teacher, I composed themed lesson plans and presentations correlating with specific subject matters. I’m also musically trained in song, dance and songwriting.

Other skills include:

* HTML
* Copy editing
* Writing
* Reporting
* Website building
* Interpersonal communication
* SEO

I have switched my major from Economics to Computer Science in my third year of college. So I know what it is like to learn programming, or computer science for the first time in life.

As someone who had never exposed to programming until very late age, I think I put Computer Science into a perspective so that it's easier for high school students to intuitively understand what programming is about and to eventually lead to high AP Computer Science scores.

I am writing to express my interest in the position. I have been interested in becoming a part of Education industry since my years at the University of Toronto. Meeting with the people, who have experience with the industry has always been pleasant, and I enjoyed its culture. With my diverse collection of extra-curricular activities and work experiences, as well as enthusiasm for the opportunity, I would be a great addition to the firm.

But that there is another to be learned cause me somewhat critical attitude in the process if understanding, which is my weak point to be supplemented. However through the participating and winning in many case competitions such as CMA National Case Competition and Ernst & Young LLP YWYV (Your World Your Vision), the projects to be conducted as a part of a long debate and discussion on the topic, which gave me good chance of skill up of my lack of critical thinking and even modest criticism of others to accommodate reasonably. Confidentially, I would say these skills that I developed will contribute to your firm’s attribute of strong analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to think innovatively.

ChaeYoon: 1990: United States: Cornell University/University at Buffalo

As a teacher, the goals I have for my students are threefold: to foster a personal desire for self-betterment through pursuit of knowledge, to highlight and emphasize specific needs a student should work on for his/her future goals, and to encourage enjoyment of learning.

Having had various leadership and tutoring positions, my experience of teaching does not come strictly from the perspective of formal education, but that of one between manager and subordinate, co-worker to co-worker, and even close-friend to close-friend, all different situations with different people from different backgrounds. The greatest strength I believe this experience affords me is my adaptability in response to the different ways one personally learns best. To put it into other words, I see myself as a catalyst for ones' growth in knowledge rather than one who simply imparts information in a systematic manner.

Teaching is unique in that one must not only effectively communicate a concept both logically and through easily understood metaphors or similes, but also communicate an empathetic message to the ones listening. Through personal experience in college, a teacher or lecturer personally disinterested in seeing the success of one's students will implicitly illicit a matching disinterest in learning.

If a student is struggling due to lack of time, I try to help construct a time-efficient study regiment of core concepts that will help solidify a fundamental understanding of a subject rather than having them brute-force memorize several specific question patterns that they will see on a test. Likewise if a student can grasp a general idea, but has trouble contextualizing it within a specific practice problem, I will focus on having them visualize real-life scenarios connecting concept to question. On the otherhand, Some concepts are inherently formulaic and require memorization through repetition and disciplined practice. My experience is knowing what subjects and concepts are best suited for healthy sustained learning.

My personality is one that finds success in the success of others. Knowing that my contributions lead to growth in others is an innate satisfaction that I believe has led to many happy students to this day.

Kevin: 1995: United States: Columbia University

Dear Recruiter,

I am writing to you with regards to your teaching position over the upcoming summer. I am a second-semester senior at Columbia University, double majoring in mathematics and music. After graduating in May 2017, I plan to stay in Korea over the summer before embarking on my PhD journey in applied mathematics at Johns Hopkins University, starting next fall.

I have always been teaching in one way or another. When I was in Brookline High School, for example, I volunteered as a math tutor at the John Pierce School in the Brookline neighborhood to teach math to elementary school students. I was also the captain of the Brookline High School Math Team at the moment, so I would often teach and discuss mathematical concepts and ways to solve competition math problems (e.g. AMC, Mandelbrot, MAML, etc.) to freshmen and sophomores. Unofficially, I also tutored SAT Math and SAT Subject Math Level 2 after getting perfect scores on both of them.

As aforementioned, I taught math as a tutor at Crimson Consulting, which is an online platform that connects tutors at Ivy League colleges to high school students in/from Australia or New Zealand. As a result, I taught 8 students over the course of 2 years, from Fall 2015 to Spring 2017. This academic year, I've been a teaching assistant for 2 upper-level math classes at Columbia, grading homework and teaching students during help-room hours. Partaking in the math community at Columbia, I also have been giving occasional math talks, i.e. lectures, which have helped me develop better communication skills. For reference, please check out the YouTube link on my CV.

Personality-wise, I try to be as understanding as possible, especially because I was often frustrated with stubborn, one-way teachers when I was the one learning at the time. I have always put premium on being approachable, as I believe personal connection, as opposed to disconnection/sense of hierarchy, undoubtedly pays off in the long run and translates to a better learning curve on the student's part. Communication, on top of quality and efficiency, is definitely what I would prioritize.

Lastly, please note that I speak fluent Korean as well. I was partly raised in Seoul, Korea before I went to Boston.

Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,

Kevin Choi

Roungseo: 1995: Korea: Harvard University

I first began tutoring older high school students in different math classes as a freshman in high school, and as a senior, I taught an AP Calculus AB class at school, as the teacher had given me full authority over one class. Throughout the years, I have constantly tutored students outside of school and just last summer, I had the privilege of teaching multiple SAT/ACT classes at a learning center in Federal Way, Washington. [SMART] Roungseo: 1995: Korea: Harvard University

By establishing a bond of mutual respect and friendship between myself and the students, I have found high levels of satisfaction and success among my students.

Taylor: Female: 1994: United States

I know that I would be a good teacher because I am great with children and love to aid in furthering their future. Although I do not have any professional experience in teaching, I have been a baby sitter for about 8 years. Within that time, I have watched children and tutored with various amounts of homework (english, math, etc.) I have also helped foreign exchange students at my college learn English.

I know I would be a good teacher because I love children and would love to aid in furthering their future. Although I do not have professional experience, I have been a baby sitter for about 8 years. Throughout that time, I have assisted with many children aged 1-11 years old. I helped with homework of all types (math, english, etc.)
