Myeong-dong or Myong-dong is a dong in Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea and is located between Chungmu-ro, Eulji-ro, and Namdaemun-ro. It covers 0.91 km² with a population of 2986, and is mostly a commercial area. Myeongdong is one of Seoul’s main shopping districts featuring mid to high priced retail stores and international brand outlets. It is a popular area for particularly young people as a center for fashion and nightlife. Myeongdong is also the ninth most expensive street in the world in terms of floorspace rents. Myeongdong has four large department stores: Migliore, Lotte Department Store, Avatar, and High Harriet. It is also the center of major financial services and securities. Some of the major Insurance, financial services companies, and investment firms that are headquartered in Myeongdong includes: Citibank, SK Corporation, Kookmin Bank, Korea Exchange Bank, Lone Star Funds, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, AIG Korea Insurance, Hana Bank, and HSBC. Seoul's financial center is divided between here and Yeouido where the Korean Stock Exchange is located. Myeongdong is also the site of the Chinese Embassy, YWCA headquarters, UNESCOHall and the Myeongdong Cathedral; the oldest Catholic cathedral in Korea. It is here where political demonstrations can sometimes be seen.[2] The southern portion of Myeongdong is served by an eponymous station on Line 4 of theSeoul Subway, while the northern area is closer to Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2.
